Dead Souls by Nikolia Gogol I have now finished Dead Souls by Nikolia Gogol and after a few early concerns about where the story was actually heading and the meandering narrative; the second half of this novella exceeded my expectations and proved that this is indeed a brilliant piece of work and a superb social commentary on 19th century Russia. Gogol suffered ill-health. Whether it was real or imaginary, he suffered it. He spent most of the three years after the publication of Dead Souls writing Part II of his magnum opus and travelling round Europe in search of a cure for his maladies. In 1845, in the midst of a spiritual crisis, he burned the manuscript of Part II for the first time. In 1841, the first part of Dead Souls was ready, and Gogol took it to Russia to supervise its printing. It appeared in Moscow in 1842, under the title, imposed by the censorship, of The Adventures of Chichikov.

It should be noticed that many specialists consider Dead Souls as a modern-day epic, while other critics think that it is ridiculous and even offensive for claiming such a status for the novel (Maguire, 1994, p.71).
